Chapter Eight

Our kiss rocked the room. Open mouths. Tangled tongues. His breath, mine. I stood on tiptoe so I could get closer. He lifted me up, stumbling slightly as he did. With my legs wrapped around his waist, we tipped onto the bed. The moment my back hit the mattress, he let go and moved away, his breaths ragged. "We…should go…now."

Was this guy even human?

I had to catch my own breath before I could speak. "Then I'll save my other questions for later."

His expression suddenly sobered. "I should make something clear. What just happened shouldn't have."

I sat up. "Because we're working together?"

"No." Flushing, he pushed his hair back and moved even farther away. "Because I don't think of you in that way."

"You're kidding, right?"

"Wrong."

"Then explain that incredible kiss."

He shrugged. "I'm a guy. You're a beautiful girl."

I waited for more. Never came. "That's it?"

"That's absolutely it."

"And the bottom line?"

"You have your life, and I have mine. Period. I don't want to talk about this again ever."

"But—"

"You heard me."

I gave up. "Fine. I get it. No sordid affair."

"Not with me, no."

"And I'm once again Kate Lawless, all alone and fighting for everything?"

My teasing words actually seemed to bother him.

"Kidding, okay? I want you. You don't want me. Welcome to my sucky life."

Though Nikolai had pretty much derailed my budding crush, I wasn't angry about it. In fact, I was sort of relieved. Why? Because he wasn't the kind of guy I could easily brush aside. At least, I didn't think so. I'd actually never known anyone quite like him.

I did wonder if this was how love happened, though. Two strangers with almost nothing in common somehow found each other at the perfect time and miraculously clicked. Sounded way cool, but was the least likely thing to happen. I mean, I simply wasn't that lucky.

There were two chairs in the cubicle when we got back to it. We each took one. I put on my headphones. "We're back."

«Good, good. Nikolai, since actual physical contact seems to help, touch her, and we will begin.»

He surprised me by taking my hand and gently lacing his fingers with mine. "Ready."

«Kate, I want you to focus on the photos in front of you. On the left, you should see the African rain forest you picked out earlier. On the right is the man you recognized from your dream.»

"Mbali Tinibu."

«That's correct. Focus, please, and tell me everything that comes to mind.»

Although touching Nikolai was a definite distraction, I knew there was work to do. "Maybe if you told me exactly what you need…"

«We don't want to influence you.»

"Right." I closed my eyes to better concentrate, but then opened them again. "I should remind you I've never done anything like this before and didn't even know I could before today. There's a very good chance I'll screw everything up."

«Not possible. Remember it's all inside your head.»

There was that.

"Let's get this party started." I closed my eyes and tried to imagine myself in the jungle of my dreams.
